Day 15: What Does My Inner Voice Sound Like?
When I slow down enough to actually hear it, my inner voice isn’t one thing, it’s a blend of every version of me I’ve ever been. Some days it’s steady. Some days it’s sharp. Some days it’s tired. But it’s always honest, even when I wish it weren’t.
There’s a part of my inner voice that is gentle. It speaks softly, like it’s trying not to startle me. It tells me I’m doing better than I think. It reminds me that growth is slow, that healing isn’t linear, that rest isn’t failure. This voice feels like warmth, like someone placing a hand on my back and saying, “You’re okay. Keep going.”
There’s another part that is critical, not because it hates me, but because it learned to keep me safe by anticipating every possible mistake. It’s the voice that double-checks everything. The one that says, “Are you sure?” The one that tries to protect me from disappointment by preparing me for it. It’s exhausting, but I understand where it came from.
There’s a voice that is protective. Fierce, even. It shows up when I’m being too hard on myself or when someone crosses a line. It’s the part of me that has finally learned to say no. The part that refuses to let me disappear into old patterns. It’s the voice that says, “You deserve better than this,” and means it.
And then there’s the quietest voice, the one I’m learning to trust. It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t panic. It doesn’t criticize. It simply tells the truth. It says things like, “This matters to you,” or “You’re hurting,” or “You need to slow down.” It’s the voice that knows me without all the noise.
When I listen closely, I can hear which voice is speaking. When I listen kindly, I can choose which one I follow.
I’m learning that my inner voice isn’t something to silence or fear, it’s something to understand. It’s a map of where I’ve been and a hint of where I’m going. And the more compassion I bring to it, the more it sounds like someone I can trust.
