Day 28: Does the “me” I present to the world match who I really am?

I’ve been thinking about the version of myself I show the world, the curated one, the composed one, the one who knows how to smile at the right moments and stay steady even when something inside me is trembling. She’s not fake. She’s not a lie. She’s just… edited.

There’s the me people see: the responsible one, the calm one, the capable one, the one who can handle things, the one who doesn’t need much, the one who keeps moving even when she’s tired.

And then there’s the me underneath:

the emotional one,

the sensitive one,

the overthinking one,

the one who feels deeply and intensely,

the one who wants connection but fears being misunderstood,

the one who carries more than she admits,

the one who is still healing from things she rarely talks about.

Sometimes those two versions overlap. Sometimes they feel like strangers.

I don’t lie about who I am, I just don’t always reveal the whole picture. I show the parts that feel safe, the parts that feel acceptable, the parts that won’t make anyone uncomfortable. I show the version of me that feels easiest to manage.

But the real me is softer than people think.

More tender.

More vulnerable.

More complicated.

More hopeful.

More afraid.

More human.

The real me cries easily.

She gets overwhelmed.

She needs reassurance.

She wants to be held.

She wants to be understood without having to explain every detail.

She wants to be chosen without performing for it.

The real me is trying, really trying, to grow, to heal, to change patterns that have been stitched into her since childhood. She’s learning to speak up. She’s learning to rest. She’s learning to stop apologizing for existing. She’s learning to stop disappearing when she feels too much.

But the world doesn’t always see that version. Not because she’s hidden, but because she’s protected.

I think part of me still believes that if I show too much softness, I’ll be judged. If I show too much need, I’ll be a burden. If I show too much truth, I’ll be misunderstood. If I show too much emotion, I’ll be “too much.”

So I present the version of me that feels safer, the one who is easier to digest.

But I’m learning that authenticity isn’t about exposing everything. It’s about alignment. It’s about letting the outside match the inside more closely. It’s about letting people see the real me in small, brave increments.

I don’t want to live behind a polished version of myself. I don’t want to be known only for my strength. I don’t want to be loved only for my stability. I don’t want to be valued only for what I can carry.

I want to be known for my softness.

For my honesty.

For my depth.

For my heart.

For the way I feel things.

For the way I care.

For the way I try.

I want the me I present to the world to be the me I actually am, not perfectly, not constantly, but increasingly.

I want to close the gap. I want to live in alignment. I want to be seen without shrinking. I want to be known without performing. I want to be myself without editing.

And maybe that’s the quiet work of becoming, letting the world meet the real me, one unguarded moment at a time.
