Day 30: What is one promise I can realistically keep to myself?
I’ve made myself so many promises over the years, big ones, dramatic ones, hopeful ones. Promises that sounded beautiful in theory but collapsed under the weight of real life. Promises that required a version of me I wasn’t yet capable of being. Promises that were more fantasy than commitment.
But the older I get, the more I realize that the promises that matter aren’t the sweeping ones. They’re the small ones. The honest ones. The ones I can actually keep.
If I had to choose one promise, one I can realistically hold, one that won’t break me, one that won’t disappear the moment life gets hard, it would be this:
I promise to tell myself the truth.
Not the softened truth. Not the convenient truth. Not the truth I think other people want me to believe. The real truth, the one that sits quietly in my chest, waiting for me to acknowledge it.
I promise to tell myself the truth about how I feel. About what I need. About what hurts. About what I’m avoiding. About what I want. About what I’m capable of. About what I’m no longer willing to carry.
I promise to tell myself the truth even when it’s uncomfortable. Even when it challenges my patterns. Even when it asks me to change. Even when it asks me to rest. Even when it asks me to begin. Even when it asks me to stop.
Because the truth is the foundation of every other promise I want to keep.
I can’t take care of my body if I’m lying to myself about why I keep postponing it.
I can’t heal if I’m pretending I’m fine. I can’t grow if I’m ignoring the places I’m stuck. I can’t connect if I’m hiding behind a version of myself that isn’t real. I can’t build the life I want if I’m unwilling to admit what isn’t working.
Telling myself the truth is the first step toward every other step.
And it’s a promise I can keep, not perfectly, not constantly, but consistently enough to matter. It doesn’t require perfection. It doesn’t require motivation. It doesn’t require a complete reinvention of my life. It just requires honesty, moment by moment.
I promise to pause before I abandon myself. I promise to listen before I numb. I promise to acknowledge what’s real before I run from it. I promise to be on my own side, even quietly.
I promise to stop lying to myself about what I’m capable of. I promise to stop lying to myself about what I deserve. I promise to stop lying to myself about what I need. I promise to stop lying to myself about what I want my life to look like.
One promise. One truth. One shift.
It’s small enough to keep. And big enough to change everything.
